"We say a lot of things to make ourselves feel good. One of those often-repeated phrases is: you can do anything you put our mind to. There is nothing wrong with applying ourselves and working hard, but there is a limit to what human work can accomplish. The truth is, we can do nothing eternally good without faith in Jesus Christ. God tells us over and over in His Word that the just shall live by faith. We see the prophet Habakkuk speaking to God about the evil he sees in his day. God answers him like this, “Behold the proud, his soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith"" (HABAKKUK 2:4). The proud will fail and fall, a principle that Paul reiterates to the churches in Galatia. Some of them had gotten wrapped up in teaching that added works to salvation rather than faith in Christ alone. One such teaching was about
following aspects of the Mosaic Law and needing to be circumcised to be true Christians. Paul took serious offence to that teaching and he speaks to the people about it boldly.
