"Israel had originally asked for a king because they wanted leadership like the nations around them. Even though God was clear that a king would cost Israel dearly, that was still their choice. Even though God had chosen Saul, because of Saul’s choices, God eventually rejected his kingship. We’re told that upon this rejection, the Spirit of the LORD that had come upon him when he was anointed for kingship, left him(1 SAMUEL 16:14 ) . We get an up-close look at how Saul’s fearful and rash decision-making started to spiral out of control. In the books of Moses, we read about how when Israel was called to war, men were allowed to opt out and go home if they were too afraid. The men following Saul were outnumbered, overpowered, and made to look and feel insignificant. This battle required the move of God. What would happen? God’s miracle would not come from Saul, but from the young man God had chosen to take Saul’s place.
