"In Jesus' time, the application of oil had a few different purposes: it was used daily to moisturize face and skin, it could be used medicinally, and it could be used ceremonially to prepare someone for a special event. This preparation was what the woman did when she anointed Jesus with her costly perfumed oil. Jesus was preparing to face the wrath of the priests, scribes, and Pharisees. Many of them had become passionately anti-Jesus. They were actively teaching against Him, and believed He would be better off dead. They believed His teaching would stop, and the people would get to see what happens to anyone who taught against them. Matthew 26 highlights an interesting contrast to their corrupted authority. It records a woman in Bethany who in the love and gratefulness of her heart knew more than the religious leaders; she honoured God by anointing the Christ. As a result, God honours her by recording for all future generations this sacrificial and deeply meaningful act.
