"We often focus on the healing and teaching elements of Jesus’ earthly ministry, but Jesus also engaged in a lot of confrontation over truth. The religious leaders were frustrated with Jesus’ authority, His healing and teaching that was outside of their traditions. Confrontations between them and Jesus occurred over what they believed and taught the people to do. Jesus has always been interested in truth. In today’s reading, we see the religious leaders confront Jesus over where His authority came from. Jesus’ response turned the tables back on them. He asked them a question about John the Baptist. This had the desired effect and rather than answering His question, the leaders began to argue amongst themselves. When we focus on trying to manipulate the situation, or sound godly or smart, rather than telling the truth, we lose the truth. The first casualty of any war is truth. This is as true today as it was 2,000 years ago. Truth has always been hard to find in our human societies. The only way we can find it is to read God’s Word, prioritize Him in our lives, and allow Him to teach and lead us.
