The ancient city of Ephesus is mentioned over twenty times in the New Testament! Quite a few key Biblical figures spent time ministering there including Paul, Timothy, and John the apostle. The importance of Ephesus had a lot to do with its location. It was an important seaport and so it saw a lot of different people come and go, it was a trading place of ideas as much as of goods. It was also a seat of Artemis worship, also called Diana by the Romans, the goddess of the hunt. Ephesus boasted a large and famous temple dedicated to her, the temple there in the time of the New Testament had been built in 250 BC and was heralded as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Ephesus is still a popular destination, except that the ruined city
is visited not by sailors and merchants but by tourists. Today, the ancient city is 5-6 miles inland because of the vast amount of silt that has been deposited over time. Even still, its impressive archaeological remains match its ancient Roman importance.
