The ancient city of Corinth was not exactly an easy place to develop a Christian church with strong character. Their culture was notoriously dark and morally bankrupt. It was a city that carried a stigma. Yet, here, God grew a church. Paul lived there for some time greater than a year to teach, challenge, and organize them. With their challenging environment in mind, it’s no great surprise that Paul wrote at least two letters to them. In 1 Corinthians, we see a letter strong in correction and challenge. In 2 Corinthians, we see a more personal letter from Paul. It was apparently less necessary in 2 Corinthians to correct behavior and more necessary to teach. Paul gives us some intriguing looks into his personal relationship with God. He even speaks of a potential spiritual visit to heaven! When we pay attention, we can hear his heart as he humbles himself and speaks about his walk with God. 2 Corinthians is a unique book that we need to study carefully.
