The name Nehemiah means “Comfort of Yahweh.” The book covers the period of time when Nehemiah and Jerusalem were in need of God’s comfort. Nehemiah was greatly troubled because the walls and gates of Jerusalem remained broken and in ruins. A city without walls was not only unprotected and vulnerable to attack but was seen as being in a humiliated state. As a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia, Nehemiah was in a prestigious and trusted position. He was possibly the only man who could ask for the king’s favour for Jerusalem, though he would have to break protocol in order to do so. In a bold act of courage, Nehemiah does just that and the king grants him permission and help. Amazingly, the reconstruction of Jerusalem’s wall took only 52 days! It is a remarkable story.
