The book of Job is considered to be one of the oldest in the Bible by many scholars. There are a
number of reasons for this, but tradition says that Moses knew and told this story to his people.
To the best of our knowledge, the story seems to be set in the time of the patriarchs: Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob. The book of Job wrestles with the question why: Why does evil happen to
good men and women? My personal belief is that the Biblical book of Job should be read and
discussed as a major part of every philosophical class in the world. The question of “why?” is a
great question. It is a natural human response to discomfort, loss, and suffering, and so it still
dominates our thoughts and ideas today. How can a man who loses everything still love God?
And how can God be just if a good man can lose everything despite being righteous? In the
end, Job’s story closes with the blessings of God. Remember, God continues to make us better
people when we submit to Him.
