It is one thing to say wise things, it is another thing to live in wisdom. Ecclesiastes speaks to the person who desires to live wisely. When we consider what it says, it seems like it’s putting a choice before us, to live wisely or just to sound wise. It is much easier to say wise things, but it is much better to live out wisdom. A difficult example comes to us in chapter 8. Solomon confesses, “Where the word of a king is, there is power…” (ECCLESIASTES 8:4). There are authority structures in this world, whether we like it or not. It is wise to not live in rebellion against these authorities, as long as it is possible. It is better to avoid rebellious confrontation for as long as we can. It is better to exhaust ourselves in prayer, before launching rebellion.
