Moab, Israel and Judah had a rocky history with one another. Technically, they were related
as Moab was a descendant of Lot and his daughter, who were Abraham’s nephew and great
niece. Moab lived east of the Dead Sea, on today’s map, that ancient land is now owned by the nation of Jordan. During the wilderness wandering period, Israel came up against a Moabite king who wanted to curse them. In Numbers 22, we learn how the king hired the prophet Balaam to curse Israel, and when he could not, how Balaam advised the Moabites to ensnare Israel through marriages that would require them to worship Moab’s god. Therefore, Israel would break their covenant with God. In so doing, Moab would get Israel to curse themselves. Later, we read how the Israelite tribe of Reuben displaced the northern Moabites and took their land. By the time of Isaiah, the rocky history had continued and we read how the Moabites will be judged by God as a result of their hate for Israel.

Trouble Coming; Isaiah 30-32
