In Jeremiah 5, we see a good articulation of the sorrow that will follow a sinful lifestyle. Jeremiah indicts the city of Jerusalem who should know the ways of God, and the covenant they have with Him. This is the same God who brought Israel out of Egypt, who made a way for them and conquered the evil groups of people who fought against them. Despite their great history with
God, He had become a saying to them; they did not know God’s ways any longer. Jeremiah’s weeping begins in the wake of the people’s failure to know God and to love God. The very place where you would expect people to know how to follow God, Jerusalem, the city that housed the Temple, and they didn’t. God shows us here the sorrow of sin. Falling away from God and His ways always brings pain and judgment.
