Hosea was a prophet to the northern kingdom of Israel. His name means salvation, and he was told by God to marry an unfaithful woman, likely a cult prostitute, named Gomer. This was a violation of God’s laws and was meant to be unusual and even shocking. Hosea’s time was very evil, and his marriage would be a symbol of Israel’s relationship with God. Just as Gomer would be unfaithful to Hosea and their marriage covenant, so Israel was unfaithful to their covenant with God. Israel had turned their backs on God, and God was still ministering to them through His prophets. There are three messages Hosea reiterates: 1) God says that He abhors the sins of Israel, 2) God will bring judgment to the people for those sins, 3) God’s love will stand firm, even in their abandonment of His covenant. The way this prophet speaks to the people is the beginning
of God’s call to salvation for us.
