Hypocrites; Matthew 22-23

In Matthew 23, Jesus uses the word hypocrite to describe the scribes and Pharisees. This was not a compliment, by any means! The word hypocrite is derived from a Greek phrase meaning to interpret or to play the part. It was often used to describe what an actor would do on stage to perform. In Jewish and Christian writing, it referred negatively to someone who pretends or who would
misrepresent the truth. Jesus used the word to describe the scribes and Pharisees to call out their false claim to spirituality. They claimed to know, teach, and live the law, demanding others to do the same, while in truth, they were not. They were no better than actors. Jesus warns us not to become as hypocrites—acting as those we are walking in the will of God but are not. The truth is simple: If we follow Jesus Christ, our lives are given to Him. He is the LORD. He is the One we pattern our
lives after. In Matthew 23, Jesus is harsh, serious, and pointed. We need to be a people who work at turning our personal, selfish desires down, and move in the direction of God’s Holy Spirit.
