Worshipper of Yahweh; Obadiah
Season 9, Episode 5

Obadiah’s Hebrew name means “worshipper of God.” This minor prophet is not minor because of what he says, but because of the volume of his writing. The book of Obadiah consists of twenty-one verses, focusing exclusively on the nation of Edom. Remember that the Edomites were the descendants of Esau. Even before they were born, twins Jacob and Esau battled in the womb. Esau was the first of the twins to be born, but later in life his brother Jacob stole
away his birthright. The rivalry between the brothers was intense. In the end, they came back together but their descendants—the Israelites and the Edomites—did not make peace. After the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt, the Edomites did not help them, in fact, they wanted Israel destroyed. Now Obadiah is called to pronounce God’s punishment on the people
who at the best of times ignored Israel, but at other times purposely troubled her.
