The Hebrew name Zephaniah means, “Yahweh has hidden” or “Yahweh hides”. He was born and ministered during the time of King Josiah. Josiah became king at a young age, and he grew into a man who loved God in a powerful way. As the king of Judah, Josiah tried to do everything according to the Word of God. Unfortunately, his work doesn’t seem to have really taken hold in the hearts of most of his subjects. Nevertheless, the amazing revival that did come during his reign had not been seen on that scale since the time of Samuel. Perhaps unexpectedly then,
Zephaniah’s ministry told of God’s coming judgment on sin. The first three chapters speak of the LORD changing everything. Zephaniah 1:2-3 says, “ ‘I will utterly consume everything from the face of the land,’ says the LORD; ‘I will consume man and beast; I will consume the birds of
the heavens, the fish of the sea,’ ”.
