Times of great problems and distress don’t just come on us for no reason. Sin is the greatest dark force in our world. It causes tremendous problems. God never desires that any should perish by sin, but in His clear and unmistakable view of the future, He knew that we would fall and fail in our original purpose. Jesus Christ is the only way to provide a remedy for our distress. God gave His only begotten Son so that we would have the opportunity to come back to Him, ask forgiveness for our sins, and restore us to God. This is the ultimate and only way we can deal with the problem of personal sin. Yet, the culture of sin and the way that evil has made its way into our society is unspeakably real. The people of Israel were lost in the darkness of sin, too, during the time of the judges, roughly 1200–1100 BC. There were thirteen judges who ruled before Samuel, before the first king was anointed.
