Gideon was inspired by God’s Holy Spirit. He was chasing 135,000 fighting men of Midian. God had selected 300 men with Gideon to pursue and conquer the Midianite forces. After they fought and conquered the Midianites and Amalekites in the valley, Gideon and his men continued in pursuit of the leaders. Passing through the cities of Succoth and Penuel, Gideon asked for food to strengthen his men. This was not a large amount of food, considering the Midianites had just moved through there. It is likely that they did not want to ally themselves with an opposing force like Gideon and give up their agreements with the Midianites. Nevertheless,
they paid the cost for siding with the enemy. God was with Gideon and He was moving uniquely. The people of Israel had prayed asking God to help, but these two cities wanted to remain as peaceful as possible in the rage of conflict. They had no idea that faith in God’s move was a big part of their future.
