It is interesting to consider who is a true friend and who is your friend for their own benefit. The story in Judges 19 is a harsh one to read about the problems growing in the ancient land of Israel and in the hearts of God’s people. We are introduced to a Levite man living in the hill country of Ephraim. His wife had been unfaithful to him and had left to go back to her father’s home in Bethlehem. Four months later the man left for Bethlehem to gather his wife and bring her back to their home. We, as the readers, quickly realize that these were very lawless times. Judges 19 is the set up for one of the most brutal and savage sins in ancient times. Israel kept
cycling in and out of sinful behaviour, and their behaviour gradually became worse and worse. The brutality was not conducted by one man or even a set of men but by many in the city of Gibeah—an Israelite city! This was a place where God’s people lived—a space where sin was not expected to be.
