King Ahab was, and is, hard to beat. He was the seventh king of northern Israel and he reigned for twenty-two years from about 874-853 BC. He was married to the infamous queen Jezebel, a Phoenician princess. Politically, this union was a good move. It ensured a profitable alliance, but spiritually it was a disaster. Jezebel introduced nationalized Baal worship and tried to systematically eradicate worship of God and the prophets of God from Israel. Ahab and Jezebel’s reign would have lasting impact on Judah’s history, as well. Their reign wasn’t just about religious reform though, Ahab and Jezebel faced quite a bit of warfare. One of those times was an alliance of kings that tried to overthrow Israel, but rather than God allowing this, He amazingly steps in. In this and other unexpected ways, God shows us how much mercy He is willing to extend.
