Just after 200 BC, Philippi came under Roman control and, as a Roman colony, was intended to be a little version of Rome. The city was the gold mining capital of Macedonia, and Greek was widely spoken there. And like all first-century Roman cities, many gods were worshipped there. In 42 BC, the city of Philippi was the site of a decisive battle which sealed the fate for Rome. It became a republic, setting things up to become an empire. Philippi was an interesting place because the Roman government sent many soldiers there and it became a garrison city. Paul first visited Philippi on his second missionary journey, following the Macedonian call as recorded in Acts 16. This is where Paul first met Lydia, a seller of purple, because she was open to the call of Jesus Christ. So, the place is significant and God was doing something there. Some of the early cities of Rome were well covered by Paul, speaking the gospel of Jesus Christ.
