God spoke to Moses and said, “Speak to my people…”, the nation of Israel. At this point in the Scripture, we have already seen that God takes His relationships very seriously. There had been a great cost for God’s people to be set free, a cost that Pharaoh had forced his people to pay. Pharaoh could have simply done what God had said. He had been given many opportunities to do so but instead chose the strenuous way. In the
same vein, when Israel finally gained their freedom they seemed to assume that they could do whatever they wanted, that sin against God had no effect on them. They were wrong. Sin affects us all, even today. God gave punishments to His people to show them that there is a right way and a wrong way to live. Most people focus on the punishment of God, the cost of sin, but the truth is that we are the ones who decide to sin or live righteously. This is a part of the amazing message of Jesus Christ: He made a way for us to come to Him when we do sin, He will forgive us and help us in our walk.
