We often think that we can be free from evil if we simply resist it. We believe that we have the energy and strength to fight our way out. The truth is that evil is not defeated by our work but by God’s power.
Israel had fallen away from God’s truth which led to a defeat in battle and the devastating loss of the Ark of the Covenant. Despite Israel’s waywardness, God allowed the Philistines to feel His power through the ark and so, they returned it to Israel. The ark was kept for twenty years in the house of Abinadab and the Israelites were inspired to turn back to God and His power to save. Samuel led the way to victory, like the other judges of Israel’s history. He called the Israelites to abandon their false gods and return to the LORD with all of their hearts. Due to his leadership in difficult times, Samuel is considered to be the thirteenth and final judge of Israel.
