Job’s second friend, Bildad, claims that Job should repent! The problem was that Job was not hiding some secret sin, and he had been careful to give offerings to God as a sign of his daily repentance and concern for righteousness. It is a very easy thing to claim to know what’s what and pronounce judgment on a situation. None of us like it when we are on the receiving end of an unjust judgment, so we should be careful how we proceed. A serious breach of common sense is to not pay attention to the needs of others, keeping their well-being and interests in mind. Bildad, in his attempted common-sense method actually fails to consider the true position of Job, putting what he believes to be true above the reality of the situation. This is easy to see in Bildad’s case, but harder to see in our own lives. There are many people who are hurt and in damaging positions today. Can we see them?
