Truly calling on God requires us to come to a place that we don’t normally go. We must humble ourselves. Humans are not good at humility. However, we must acknowledge that we cannot do what needs to be done, we cannot save ourselves no matter how hard we try. Over and over in history, proud and unrelenting societies end, badly. The book of Proverbs tells us that, “When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom” (PROVERBS 11:2). The mourning that happens in the book of Hosea is powerful. Israel didn’t learn the powerful lesson of humility. We must learn to acknowledge that we are tarnished with sin. Even so, the good news is that there is a perfect God who loves us enough to make a way for our salvation, who loves us enough to teach us the truth!
