According to the dictionary, the English word covenant means an agreement or promise, usually formal, between two or more people or groups to do or not to do something specified. However, the word covenant in Hebrew, briyth (ber-eeth), means something much more profound, it is an alliance or pledge between God and man. In other words, God was setting up a binding promise between Him and Abraham, to bless him and his descendants. But we need to remember that the LORD is very serious about His covenants. We should not take anything the LORD says with a grain of salt, as the saying goes. When God speaks, it is profound and holy‚-‚-it is truth. So, we, too, should make every effort to listen to what He says and take very seriously what He is telling us.
