His name in Hebrew means salvation. Hosea’s life did indeed represent God’s salvation, he was a prophet of God during the time just before Northern Israel fell to Assyria. Just as God was dealing with a people who had blatantly broken covenant with Him, so Hosea married a prostitute who would not keep the marriage covenant. The first two chapters of the book of Hosea are rich with conflict and meaning. God was illustrating the reality of Israel’s idolatry and foolishness. Just like his God, Hosea experienced turmoil and pain in his marriage. We aren’t told how it ended for Hosea, but we do know that through him God effectively articulated His disappointment in Israel, identified the problem, and offered solutions. Hosea chapter 3 is only 5 verses, but they are powerful and meaningful.
