There are three kinds of prayer I would like to highlight. First, is a private time when we devote ourselves to personal daily prayer with the LORD. Next, is small group prayer in which we pray with people that we know or even pray for someone on the spot, in our conversations with them. The third kind of prayer is corporate, public prayer that sees us pray in large groups of people. It is possible for our personal prayers to grow into public prayer, especially when it comes to repentance for very public things. In our reading today, we see Ezra confronted with a great trespass of God’s people against His Law. They had not established themselves as a holy and different people, but had mixed with the pagan peoples of the land. God had told them not to intermarry with pagan nations, so that they could keep idolatry and false worship away from themselves and their children. But as soon as they got a new chance in the land, it seems they completely abandoned God’s Law. In Ezra 9, we hear Ezra begin to pray as an individual which inspires an important round of corporate prayer.
