One of the great offences listed in the Bible is pride—believing we are great people when we are not. There is evil in this world, along with sin. There are many psychologists who are easily offended by that statement even though it is true. It was James, also known as James the Just, the writer of the book of James in the New Testament who told us, “whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.’ But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil” (JAMES 4:14-16). The Bible also tells us, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (PROVERBS 1 6 : 1 8 ). The Bible is clear about pride and learning to avoid it. We learn a lot about its downfall and how to avoid it, as we read in Deuteronomy 9 today.
