The name Babylon is fascinating. It sounds like a Hebrew word meaning confusion. During the
time of the prophet Isaiah, Babylon was the place where Judah was destined to be exiled for their rebellion against God. That Babylon is remembered in history as the neo-Babylonian Empire, and it had a great impact on the course of Israelite and Biblical history. For example, the Bible is written primarily in Hebrew and later in Greek, but thanks to the Babylonian exile the Bible also includes a small amount of Chaldean, or Aramaic. On a modern map, the centre of the ancient neo-Babylonian empire is in modern day Iraq. Here, Ezekiel and Daniel were exiled and had ministries. Here, many former Judeans made their homes and lives meaningful with God’s help. When Isaiah speaks of Babylon, he also seems to be pointing to a greater concept. A Babylon that spans the centuries and needs to be defeated ultimately by God. It is a place of absolute confusion. Isaiah speaks about its coming judgment and how God will move.
