How many times can we say that God acted on our behalf when we didn’t deserve it? My guess
would be: Too many times to count! God’s mercy is not just for us personally, it also makes Him
known to others. Such was the time of Israel’s exit from Egypt. They had gone into Egypt as a
family of just over seventy people, and four hundred years later came out of Egyptian slavery
as a nation of over a million people. How and why did God act on their behalf in this way?
Clearly, God’s great mercy (a big part of His character) was in effect as He dealt with the men
and women of His nation. The musical lyrics of Psalm 106 highlight what happened, and it is a
great piece to read and meditate on. Much of the Psalms are a reflection on what God has done
in history and what His character is like. This is one of the reasons we are encouraged to read,
pray, sing, and mediate on the Psalms.
