"The Hebrew word for holiness is qôdesh, which means “separateness or set apart” (STRONG’ S HEBREW LEXICON H6944). It is also the root word for sanctify and saint. This meaning seems simple enough, yet it is complex in describing a Holy God. Set apart in what way? God’s holiness is defined by His perfection. In biblical history, we read about some ancient kings who honed in on this idea that they themselves were great, majestic, and holy, set apart from the common folk and things. Therefore, any law they chose to set in place was unchangeable, it was as good as done. But in our world of imperfect people that can never be the case. Only God makes us holy. In Exodus 33, Moses attempts to separate himself from the people who were consistently unholy. Rather than a tabernacle intended as the dwelling of the LORD among His people, Moses set up a tent of meeting outside the camp of the Israelites. Now anyone wanting to consult the LORD would have to go there.
