In many of the recorded situations that we see him in, Moses seems to have been a hothead. When God is ready to release His wrath on the people however, it inspired Moses’ mercy. Moses challenged what God said He was going to do to Israel, and God relented. This is a challenge to understand because God’s character does not change; His mind doesn’t truly change because He knows the future, He knew Moses would plead with Him. God seems to do and say many things in order to work with us in our situations and with our characters. God has a plan that goes beyond what we may see in the moment. At the time of Exodus 32, Israel had chosen to forget Moses, they felt they had been abandoned and so they turned to what they knew – idolatry. Aaron committed a fatal flaw of leadership: Leadership is not giving people what they want, but leading them into what they need. The LORD doesn’t waste this situation of Exodus 32, lessons were learned then, and lessons should be learned now.
