"Aaron and Moses had to redefine their understanding of sacred. In their time, as it is today, there were people who practiced other religions, idols were worshipped and upheld as sacred and divine. Coming from Egypt and Midian, Aaron and Moses would have been very familiar with at least some of these pagan systems. The presence of the true God, however, was to be treated differently than the idols of the nations. God’s presence was so holy that one could physically die if they entered God’s presence unprepared. To enter God’s presence, Aaron had to learn the proper ways to prepare himself; how to separate himself as holy to God. There were very specific requirements that Aaron, and all high priests after him, had to follow. They learned that God alone is truly sacred. For them, worshipping God was systematic and required following exact instruction. God is holy! He was preparing His people as part of His plan to redeem the world.
