The people of Judah were in a bad place, and Jeremiah was called to prophesy against them. His words gave them the option of repentance, and he declared them at the gate of the Temple. Their problem though, was that they had believed their own lies. They believed that God would continue to help them if they took care of His temple. “The temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD….” ( JER. 7:4 ), was their saying.
Jeremiah’s proclamations showed that they had deeply misunderstood God’s intention for the Temple. They could not worship other gods, trust in false prophets, break the covenant law, and worship God. These actions disqualified them. God did not desire their religious observance only when they were in the Temple, He desired that their hearts be set on Him.
