"The Nazirite vow is described back in Numbers 6, and it was a way that men and women could temporarily commit their lives to God in a special manner. With the stipulations of Numbers 6 as our background, it is curious that God calls on a person not yet born to be a Nazirite from birth. To do this, God approaches the child’s soon-to-be mother. The Angel of the LORD appears to her and gives her the news of her upcoming pregnancy and instructions for what she needs to do to ensure that her son will be a Nazirite from birth. She is told that her son will begin to deliver Israel from their dire enemy of the time, the Philistines. There are many
interesting details in this account. One is how the Bible records the Angel of the LORD dealing directly with the mother, and only after intercession from both the husband and the wife, did He speak with the husband. Another is the couple’s reaction to realizing that they were speaking with the Angel of the LORD.
