"In Luke 2:22-24, Mary and Joseph arrive in Jerusalem to bring a purification offering after the birth of their Son Jesus. The offering was made in obedience to the laws given to a woman after childbirth in Leviticus 12. The newborn baby was not born impure, but the mother was
to be purified from the shedding of blood and bodily fluids and discharges that were all part of the birthing process. The laws given, here, should not be regarded in any way as negative toward birth, childbearing, or women. To be impure does not mean to be immoral or evil, it was a ceremonial way to recognize and symbolize God’s complete holiness compared to our
lack of holiness. The Law is always pushing this principle about Who makes people holy, to ensure Israel remembers it is God who makes them holy, not they themselves. How amazing is it, then, to see the ultimate offering and the shedding of Jesus’ own blood to fully cleanse and
make atonement for sin once and for all, to make all who believe onto Christ holy.
