"The Roman Empire was expanding in the first century BC, taking over the province Galatia in 64 BC as a foothold into their area. When the last king of Galatia died in 25 BC, the Romans further inherited the collection of cities which together were called Galatia. Paul visited the province of Galatia during his first missionary journey in AD 46-48. The later letter that Paul wrote to the Galatians was the greatest inspiration for Martin Luther in the reformation of the Church during the 1500's. In fact, history tells us that Martin Luther referred to Galatians as “my epistle”. Paul had originally written Galatians to the believers of that area out of concern that they were beginning to reject the gospel by adding laws and regulations to it. This was typified by the practice of circumcision, some people had taught the Galatians that they didn’t just need Christ, they also needed to follow the Mosaic law. This is a book in which we see Paul become very animated about the gospel.
