One of the greatest kings of ancient Jerusalem was a man named Hezekiah. He was king of Judah after his father Ahaz. Ahaz completely rebelled against the ways of God, and the Word of God, and the Law of God. To me, that makes it all the more amazing that when Hezekiah took over the kingdom, he completely changed course. When he was only twenty-five years old, this man decided to forsake the ways of his father Ahaz, and follow God, listening to the prophets, the Word, and the Law. This was a very good decision. It gave Jerusalem a stay of execution. During Hezekiah’s reign, Northern Israel fell to Assyria which began a real test of
will and trust for Hezekiah. Would he still choose to listen to God when all of his hopes for a glorious, revived Judean kingdom weren’t realized? Would he follow God when life was extremely difficult when his people might rebel against him? The Assyrians besieged Jerusalem and mocked Hezekiah, yet he and his men didn’t even need to sharpen their swords, God confronted the Assyrians overnight and, in the morning, Assyria had lost 185,000 soldiers.

Our concept of authority can be very messed up, thanks to sin. However, let us be clear in our Christian belief that Jesus Christ is the head of our households.
