Jesus Christ was Jewish and made a serious and powerful dent in the religious armor of the Jewish statehood. Often, when He was in active ministry, He resisted the religious elite. He spoke harshly to the scribes, Pharisees and Sadducees. But now, Jesus Christ had been crucified, rose from the dead, ascended into Heaven, and through the Holy Spirit was living in many thousands of people. Barnabas the encourager and Paul the apostle were set apart by the Holy Spirit, commissioned, and sent out to make their first missionary journey to spread the gospel message of Jesus Christ. One of the people they encountered was from the city of
Paphos on the island of Cyprus. The government on this island seemed to be religious, so Paul and Barnabas went to Paphos and began to minister. There was a powerful sorcerer by the name of Elymas who resisted them there. Acts 13 has all the important details.
