The reign of King David was the beginning of Israel’s golden age. Saul was king before him, but he didn’t reach for God’s will like David did. Saul was anointed by Samuel—the last judge of Israel—but Saul was chosen by God because the people had been consistently walking away from God, and now they wanted a new type of leader: not a judge to work with the people
on behalf of God, but a strong king to rule in His place. After Saul became what the people deserved, God chose a king for the people based on the heart. David came from the shepherd’s field, was not a firstborn, and definitely was not perfect. But David knew and ultimately pursued the heart of God. When he came to the end of his life, he had written many songs and prayers. The Psalms give us a sample of his music as “…the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel” ( 2 SAMUEL 23:1). 2 Samuel 23 records David’s last words, as well as a list of the men who followed him.
