Solomon’s death ushered in a time of great struggle for Israel. Solomon’s son Rehoboam inherited a kingdom with many problems. Israel’s frustrated population welcomed back an enemy that had been hiding in Egypt, Jeroboam, and with Rehoboam’s inexperienced decisions, the kingdom split. Ten of Israel’s tribes to the north declared Jeroboam their king, leaving the two tribes of Judah and Benjamin the land to the south, and the diminished kingdom of Judah ruled by Rehoboam. This was a deep divide and an intense struggle that would see a lot of warfare. The split didn’t make them any better either. Northern Israel was established with Jeroboam’s tainted religious innovations, while Judah was left with Solomon’s idolatry polluting the true
worship of God. Problems that topple nations are always spiritual and deep. As readers, we now begin the histories of the divided nation of Israel and Judah.
