Though we remember well the famous prodigal son parable that Jesus told, we often don’t remember who He told it to. Jesus’ audience was split, there were religious Jews there listening as usual, but there were also tax collectors present. Tax collectors were not well-liked in Jesus’ day because they had a reputation for being sympathizers with Rome, traitors of sorts, they had a reputation for being unfair and stealing for their own benefit. They were there when Jesus told the parable of the prodigal son, the shepherd and the lost sheep, and the woman with the lost coin. Jesus’ preaching fulfilled the promises of God. In many ways, He was expanding the Kingdom of God. Following Him is not about a good feeling or moving emotions, it is often difficult, and always worth it. How amazing is it that the grace of God is for all people, those the world sees as worthy and those we deem unworthy; the good and the bad.
