"Trumpets weren’t just used for music and worship in Israel, they were also used for signaling
and announcing, they were effective tools of communication. They are used in an interesting
way in our reading today. When the people of Israel surrounded the ancient city of Jericho, they were careful to follow everything the LORD had commanded them, which of course, involved trumpets. Israel was to spend six days walking around the city, this would have given the people of Jericho ample time to flee. Israel was commanded not to make a noise or speak a word for these six days. Then on the seventh day, Joshua was told to command a shout. The people did. The walls fell, and then the city. How interesting that sound played such an important role in these events. The trumpets sounded and then on the seventh day the people sounded, in obedience and praise to God.
