"Jesus challenged the thinking and priorities of the religious leaders of His day simply by going about His ministry. Jesus didn’t worry Himself to keep traditions of men, the modifications that had been made to the Mosaic Law. When He went to the pool of Bethesda on a Sabbath day, people may have known that trouble was to come. The pool of Bethesda was believed to offer miraculous healing, but only for a select few. Despite the many gathered there, Jesus singled out a man paralyzed for 38 years. He had been desperately trying to beat everyone to the pool but could never make it in time. Jesus showed mercy on him, speaking with him and
then healing him on the spot, no pool required. He told the man to pick up his mat and walk. The man was stunned—he wasn’t even sure who it was that had healed him. The religious leaders were so offended by Jesus and His disregard for their rules that they saw the miracle as evil. They accused Jesus of encouraging sin because Christ told the man to carry his mat.

The Confrontation; John 18-19
