Have you ever anticipated a sure victory in your life and then experienced a sudden failure? That is exactly what happened to Israel during the time of Joshua. Israel was finally ready to fully dedicate herself to the LORD and move in to take the promised land. Jericho would have been a terrifying first target; huge, ancient and well defended, this city fell before the feet of the Israelites as they followed God’s instructions. The next city was Ai. Ai was so small in comparison that the Israelites didn’t even think they needed to send many of their men to the battle. After Jericho, it was a sure thing. But they lost! They were forced to run for their lives. What happened? How could they have victory at mighty Jericho, only to fall at Ai? God was supposed to be their strength. Where had He gone?
