The Philistines began to threaten and ultimately conquer Israel during the days of the judges, in about 1200 BC. This would be the last period of time that Israel would be governed by judges. Samuel, Hannah’s firstborn son, was the last judge of Israel. Now Israel had fought against the Philistines and failed several times, but this time they assured themselves that if they took the Ark of God (their sacred weapon) into battle with them, it would turn the tide, and they would defeat the Philistines. But they were mistaken, deeply mistaken. The Ark was captured by the Philistines. For seven months, however, the hand of the LORD was heavy on the Philistines with a plague of tumors and destruction. They could not take it anymore! They wanted to give the Ark back. But how? Consulting with their priests and diviners they came up with an idea—that is what we read about today in 1 Samuel 6.
